Pownal Vermont is a quaint town that boarders Williamstown Mass, and New York State. This town was named for the Royal Governor of Massachusetts Thomas Pownall, but the Charter of 1760 dropped the last letter of his name, naming the town Pownal. Pownal has a population of 3,560 people. This little town had two US Presidents Chester A. Authur and James A. Garfield who both taught school in Pownal.
This small town is known for its beautiful mountains, valleys and farm country. Although Pownal is a part of the Bennington school district, the small town elementary school with grades kindergarten through six grade is located in Pownal. This town is well known for its days of thoroughbred racing which was later replaced by grey hound racing until the race track closed altogether in 1992. Today this site is occasional used to host rock concerts, the antique car show and the Pownal fair.
